Let’s Talk Skin Cancer and My Favorite Sunscreen

Skin Cancer and My Favorite Sunscreen SPFs

Skin cancer is real and it runs deep in my genes on both sides of my family. However, I came from a time when I completely dismissed the use of sunscreen and now I’m paying for it with pre-cancerous cells in the form of actinic keratoses, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and basal cell carcinoma.

My mother also suffered with Melanoma and her surgery was enough to convince me to stop exposing myself to UV by suntanning in the natural sun and in tanning beds.

Here are my picks:

My skincare philosophy has undergone a profound transformation. Several bouts with skin cancer have opened my eyes to the importance of sun protection, no matter your age or stage in life.

Chemo Cream Journey for Skin Cancer

These photos of me while going through the process of chemotherapy cream last March are worth a thousand words of why I am now so adamant about sunscreen.

My dermatologist had prescribed a compound of Fluorouracil and Calcipotriene cream to treat the numerous AKs and pre-cancerous cells on my face. The treatment was four days; however, it took several weeks for the formula to target the skin cancer cells and bring them to the surface, which is the redness you see in the photos. (Crazy, right?)

The good news is that it has left my complexion looking so much better and I vowed after that dreadful experience that I would be vigilant in my SPF and skin protection. Here are a couple of ‘after’ photos:

And 3 months after:

Sunscreen isn’t just about avoiding sunburn– it’s a frontline defense against many skin woes, including premature aging and, most crucially, skin cancer. Believe me, a tan’s temporary allure pales compared to the long-term consequences of sun damage. I now use a self-tanner to get any suntanned appearance on my skin.

I realize sunscreen can feel like a chore, especially when juggling a million things. But I’ve discovered some game-changing solutions that will make SPF your new beauty essential and best friend for sun protection.

Korean Sunscreen

Enter Korean sunscreen – a skincare revelation that’s taken the world by storm and that I discovered this year and have been using faithfully. What makes Korean sunscreen different? Well, for starters, Korean sunscreens often boast a lightweight, non-greasy formula that’s a dream to wear. But perhaps the most intriguing difference lies in their ingredients. Unlike many American sunscreens, Korean formulas use innovative filters that provide broader protection than American sunscreens that have to go through years of FDA approval.

If you have tried other SPF underneath your make-up, you may have become frustrated and I get it! I did too. However, my favorite Korean sunscreen is lightweight, comfortable, and doesn’t leave a white cast, or pill while applying makeup. I also find it leaves a beautiful glowy appearance.

Beauty of Joseon’s Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics SPF 50+ PA++++ is effortless and melds into my skincare routine. I use it over my regular moisturizer (CeraVe) and before using my foundation or tinted moisturizer (Revision Intellishade) Mind you, my other products also have an SPF, because, the more the merrier!

I also have the Beauty of Joseon’s Matte Sun Stick that I keep in my bag so I can reapply throughout the day. It glides on flawlessly over my makeup and it is soft, smooth, and neither product has a heavy scent. I have also purchased other BOJ skincare products and so far I am hooked!

The affiliate links I have provided are to genuine Beauty of Joseon products that are authorized through the Beauty of Joseon’s official website and I would caution you from purchasing these through some vendors (i.e. Amazon or WalMart) as there are many dupes and counterfeits of the brand.

Be sure you verify the authenticity by scanning the seal through the BOJ app. I have also purchased through the Cocomint shop on TikTok shop to take advantage of free shipping and my products have been verified. The shipping cost and time from Korea on the BOJ website were not conducive for me.

Other Sunscreen

Not only have I had skin cancers on my face. I have also had areas on my arms and chest that had to be treated. Therefore, using a daily sunscreen on all areas of my body has become a priority. Finding a reputable sunscreen without a heavy odor and that does not transfer to my clothes has been a challenge. I found a formula of Neutrogena that is working. It’s Neutrogena Invisible Daily Defense and I keep a tube in my bag and my car so I can stay protected.

It’s Cloudy So I Don’t Need SPF (WRONG!)

This is also your reminder that just because it is overcast does not mean the UV rays aren’t affecting your skin. Always wear sunscreen on sunny or cloudy days.

Conclusion

Remember, sunscreen is just one part of the equation. Regular check-ups with a dermatologist are essential for catching any signs of trouble early on. Your skin is precious, so don’t skimp on the TLC it deserves.

As we embrace the wisdom that comes with age (yes, this is my subtle way of saying I am wise and aged!) let’s also embrace the importance of sun protection. After all, a healthy glow is timeless, and it’s up to us to nurture and safeguard it for years to come, because I plan to keep being active, fit, and live healthy for the entirety of my life.

So, here’s to a future filled with sunshine, laughter, and SPF-covered adventures. Let’s make every day a sunscreen day – your skin will thank you later.
