Just Take a Walk

Part 2

My fitness journey continues this week with probably the most simple thing one can do. In fact, I debated even making a blog post about it because we pretty much all do this daily; and I talked about it quite a bit on my hysterectomy journey. 

However, I decided it absolutely deserved a post because it has been the most consistent way I have continued to move over the past few years, especially in 2020: Walking! 

Y’all, I tried to be a runner once upon a time. I mean I would run, but I said “I was a runner.” I would build up to running about 2 to 3 miles and I would begin having knee pain. I finally decided I was in fact, not a runner!

Therefore, I simply became a walker. 

I also did not feel bad about that. I have since walked but not necessarily consistently; up until this year that is. 

I’ve always enjoyed hiking. However, this at the beginning of 2020, I decided I would take it to a new level by attempting to hike a different trail each month.  Of course I had no idea when I made that goal that a) I would be having a hysterectomy within 6 weeks of 2020; and b) that a global pandemic would ensue. I didn’t let either of those stop me. 

After the surgery, I immediately started walking again. It took a few weeks, but I was soon up to walking 1 mile, 2 miles, and 3 miles. I also didn’t stop my pursuit of at least one hike per month. 

In fact, during March, April, and May, I was hiking almost every weekend…because, basically that was all I could do. Also, I cannot recommend the Adidas Terrex hiking shoes enough (pictured above). If you are looking for a hiking shoe that feels more like a sneaker instead of a hiking boot, this is for you. 

I am currently working on walking at least 8000 steps per day. Most days, I surpass that. During the time of quarantine and working from home this spring, I was walking 2-3 times per day. It was glorious! Walking has definitely become a huge part of my life and I hope I never lose the ability to walk. 

If you are currently not exercising or practicing fitness, I would highly recommend walking. Start small. Walk to the end of your sidewalk or your driveway; or heck, walk inside your home from one end to the other. Slowly build up each day by walking a little further. 

I would also recommend some type of smart watch. I use an Apple Watch, but there are so many different models to choose from, in every price range. That accountability is so helpful. Speaking of accountability. Get a walking buddy, or at least share your goals and keep each other accountable. I love the sharing feature on my Apple Watch.  You an even have friendly competitions with your friends or family.
